Can anyone tell me why the blinds on the airplane windows have to be open when taking off and landing please?

Chance of aircraft malfunction is higher during take off and landing, so having the blinds open makes it easier for passengers and crew to spot anything abnormal. Also, in the event of an emergency, it makes it easier for rescue and recovery to assess the situation - or so I'm told!
