Puerto Azul is a nice hotel half way up the hill between the bottom commercial centre and the Europa centre at the top of the hill.

It doesn't get all that windy in jan, while your there pop in The Tavern in the europa centre i used to dj in there lol
I spend a couple of months on the island each year. Jan is one of the worst months for weather in canarian eyes but its still beach weather to us Brits! I would say between 10 and 4 is when its beach time but you can get cooler days so tell them to pack at least 1 warm piece of clothing as when its cold theres not a great deal to do in PR...use this time to explore the island instead.

Stayed at the Puerto Azul a couple of years ago. Its closer to the smaller Europa centre than the main commercial centre. Nice pool. Most rooms look out onto PR main beach or the ocean. I know some of the rooms were being refurbed as it had got a little tired looking.

It does do half and full board options but I wouldn't recommend these - plenty of nice restaurants close by.
Agree with Ruthie, the Azul is probably the best pool area of all of the hotels plus if its warm enough pop down to Amodores beach, beautiful
