We are planning a 3 week holiday touring New England. Thinking we would fly to New York for a few days then travel to Boston then hire a car to do the touring. Have heard Boston isnt too great and that we should stay outside of there. Also we have a notion to try one of the huge american camper vans ( winnibego?) . Anyone like to share any experiences/ advice about this kind of holiday. Thanks

Boston's nice but it isn't New York (though it can be almost as expensive) so it might seem a bit of a letdown. You can stay outside and take the train into town. When I've toured New England it's just involved staying at motels, which come at all types and prices (cheapest are usually Econolodges at about 35 per night for a room - 2 or 3 people) and are more common than campsites for Winnebagos. Loveliest time is autumn when the trees are changing colours, around the start of October.
I loved Boston but haven't been to New York. You may be better flying to Boston as the airport is just a short and cheap ride on the tube to downtown. Then get the train to New York. That way you avoid the very expensive taxi ride from JFK to downtown NY. Lots to do and see in Boston and it's all walkable. If you have time think about Cape Cod; Newport ,Rhode Island; Mystic, Connecticut; North Conway, New Hampshire; Boothbay Harbour, Maine; Salem. All great places with lots to see. We went late September and saw a young black bear on a side road in Vermont. I would be happy to share our itinerary with you if you'e interested.
