London Underground Network

A colleague of mine asserts that you can travel from any point on London Underground network to another point with a maximum of 2 changes. Is this true or does anyone have an example of more than 2? For fairness length of journey should not be a factor.

Never heard of this but it is probably true. Given the density of stations in central london on the different lines, there are a lot of connections possible. for instance, for me, on the eastern central line, I can connect with virtually every other line with just one change.

It's true. Every station (other than as below) is either on the Circle Line or on a line which has a direct route to a station which is on the Circle Line. So that means that to get from A to B, you can always take a train to somewhere on the Circle Line, where you make your first change. Then travel around the Circle Line to a station which is on the line which serves B, where you make your second change. (In many cases, of course, there are far easier routes but it shows that the theory is generally true).

The only exception to being able to do the middle bit of the journey on the Circle Line is if one end of your journey is on the East London Line. It's the only line which doesn't meet up with the Circle Line. However, changing at Whitechapel allows you to use the Hammersmith & City Line (which serves the same stations as the Northern section of the Circle Line) or the District Line (which serves the same stations as the Southern section of the Circle Line), so you can still effectively connect by the 'Circle Line', even though the train will actually be running on one of the other lines mentioned.

as the East London line won't be working again until the Olympics, Chris's proviso isn't really necessary. But you don't need the Circle line; the Jubilee crosses all the other lines, including the East London.
