has anyone been to lake superior in minnesota? Any recommendations for a peaceful trip?

Sure... we go there often, but Minnesota only borders Lake Superior for a short distance... from Duluth on the southwest corner of the Lake's shore in Minnesota to Grand Portage on the northeast which is also a border of Canada and Minnesota

Duluth is a fairly large city in the Iron Range, probably about 90,000. It has one of the nation's largest and best equipped railroad museums and we always enjoy watching large sea going vessels enter the harbor and dock. Just north of Duluth is a smaller village of Two Harbors, and again it is very scenic with a large State Park with beautiful waterfalls.including Gooseberry Falls on the Gooseberry River, Split Rock Falls, on Split Rock River and many others. There are excellent hiking trails around all of these.
A really unique place to stay is the Northern Rail Train Car B&B in Twin Harbors. Just a few rooms, but all made to look like a railroad depot and the rooms are made from actual railroad freight cars... seen here: http://www.northernrail.net/

As well, one of the most spectacular light houses in the entire U.S. happens to be in Minnesota... seen here: http://www.mnhs.org/places/sites/srl/ . Lots of good places to eat as well.

Duluth has a unique aquarium... very large and over three stories tall and contains specimens of all Great Lakes fish and wildlife... seen here: http://www.glaquarium.org/ .

The summer season is busy, so plan ahead. The nearest large service airport in Minneapolis, probably about 150 miles, but a beautiful drive. There is airline service into Duluth, however...
