Passport needed for ferry travel between Scotland & Northern Ireland?

I am an American presently in Scotland and i stupidly left my passport in England - I need to travel to Belfast by Ferry - will i need or be asked for my passport? Are there border guards between NI and Scotland?

No. It's all the United Kingdom.
They've never asked anytime I've used that route, though no doubt you'll need a passport to travel two stops on the bus before long.
Once you are in Northern Ireland you won't even need your passport if you wish to cross the border into the Republic.
Gef - This is the case officially. However, in the past eighteeen months or so, immigration officers from the Republic of Ireland have been boarding the Belfast-Dublin train and questioning non-caucasians and, in some cases, sending people back to Northern Ireland.
