Pretty sure there are no restrictions on France. After all it's all 'European' passports now so technically you shouldn't need one anyway (and I'm NOT saying leave it at home!).

I'm fairly sure that as long as your passport is valid when you travel there are no restrictions. But, as secretspirit says (more or less), you have to have one, and it must be valid.
