If you use your UK mobile in Spain, to contact someone who's only on the other side of the street to you (irrespective of whether their phone is on a Spanish or UK network), it will still be charged as an international call, so the charges can mount up very quickly.

You should be able to access the Spanish number by dialling +34 in front of the number. (That will work whether you're in the UK or in Spain. The usual rule with international calls is to drop the leading zero in the number but your post implies that there is no leading zero anyway. To display the '+' on your screen, press * twice, quickly).

Well blow me Chris, I never knew that! Have listed any numbers I need when abroad with a +sign LOL

The cost is huge with certain mobile networks - T-Mobile charge you 75p just to connect then is around 35ppm. O2 on the other hand is a lot cheaper as they have a free bolt on. calls 18ppm
When we were in France last year I didn't have to do anything other than just hit 'call' to call my sisters mobile - I didn't add or remove any numbers before hand

many thanks to you both but my phone isnt very new and however fast i press the * button it doesnt change to +. can i just use 1 or 2 zeros plus the 34 ?
Oh, it seems that not all mobile phone keyboards are the same. I've only ever used Nokia phones, where the + symbol is on the * key. I've just looked at a mobile phone catalogue and I see, for example, that it's on the '0' key with a Siemens phone. Actually, that makes sense because all that + does is call up the international access code which, from mosr European countries is 00. (i.e. if you can't find + on your phone, just dial 00 instead).

Yes, just dial in 2 zeros instead of the + sign.
