Yes, I think so. It's not in the UK. However, I've only been checked once. This may be why : http://www.oasis.gov.ie/moving_country/moving_abroad/common_ travel_area_between_ireland_and_the_UK.html You will at least need photo ID to fly though, as this is standard practice nowadays.
How the hell are we supposed to respond? You might be posting from Bhutan or Micronesia for all we know. Detail is good, as is using those funny looking keys that have the upwards pointy arrow on them.
Top tip - when leaving you own country to go to another always take a passport.
I've never had / heard of a problem travelling from the UK to Ireland via ferry without a passport. Airlines can be VERY particular about it though.

Irish Republic in not part of Great Britain so in all likelihood you will need a passport.
no but you do need some form of id so they know that you are a member of the uk
