Travel in Jordan

I have a day in Amman, Jordan on my way to India and am wondering if I have enough time to travel to Petra and back to catch my flight at night? Is hiring a car possible?

You really need a whole day to see anything of Petra. The distance from Amman to Petra is about 230 km, so you are unlikely to have enough time. In fact the whole site is so huge and there is so much to see that some people stay there camping for a week. I'm sure you would be able to find some tours in and around Amman which would allow you to get back to the airport in time for your flight.

While I would have agreed with SteveD that it wasn't practical to visit Petra in one day from Amman, I note that some short tours of Jordan (designed mainly for Israilis) do precisely that - see, for example, http://www.inisrael.com/cto/jordan_tours.htm

However, I imagine that there is a very early start from Amman, and the return there is very late in the evening; so this might not fit in with your flights.
