staying 4 nts in SF . any suggestions of a nice hotel where we can get around easily , not too expensive. thanks.

try the Marriot group they have several in SF, we stayed in the one near the waterfront, not exactly cheap but everything you could want even an iron and ironing board in each room.Also stayed in the one nearest to airport before, cant fault it, but I expect you can find cheaper.
enjoy your stay and book early if you want to do the Alcatraz trip.

We stayed in the Sir Francis Drake which was very reasonable. It was located on one of the main cable car routes, so was ideally placed.

I agree with Dee regarding Alcatraz....and I would recommend a helicopter flight if you can fit one in. We flew over 49ers stadium, Bay Bridge, Alcatraz and over (and under!) the Golden Gate Bridge.
