The best mountains are around Saltzburg, which isn't that far from Vienna. And you can fly there. We skied at Abtenau in the Dachren range last year, a picturesque resort in the heart of Austria and an hour's drive from Vienna

There is a ski area near Vienna called Semmering. This hill has been used for World Cup racing and is one of the popular day visit for the Viennese. There are not many runs, but for a day visit it is fine. Cheap deals including Return rail journey from Vienna and a day lift pass can be obtained for about �25 - �30.
