an airline recently lost my luggage on the way back from spain - i checked in with a friend and his luggage turned up ok - ive asked the airline about the possibilty of someone stealing it off the luggage belt but they said they think it's stil in spain - surely with the amount of camera's in airports now they'd be able to check camera footage ???

And how would they spot someone picking up your suitcase even if they had cameras? So many suitcases look the same these days, unless yours was particularly unusual, I don't see how they could identify it.

Even if they could, how would they identify the person that picked it up? Wouldn't you have seen it on the luggage belt and stopped someone from nicking it?

What difference does it make now anyway - it's missing. Whether it be in Spain, in Timbuktu or been stolen, you don't have it so it is irrelevant really what has happened to it.
It is probably still in spain or gone on another flight , My case went missing on way back from dom rep , my husbands came back on the flight but a got mine back 16 days later.
Don't want to worry you but it is so easy to pick up the wrong case. Last time I went to Spain, I saw my case travelling down the reclaim belt, and then saw someone further up pick it up. I ran up and asked if I could check it, and it was mine - turned out we both bought the same case from a supermarket.

It was a totally genuine mistake, but it could have ruined the holiday had I not noticed. Since then I make my case as distinctive as possible.
i know this doesnt help or answer the question but my mum bought one of those luggage straps with my name on it (and one for my husband, son and daughter) at the time i thought it was cheap and taccy but it has proven to be so useful. We wouldnt travel without them, as soon as our cases are on the conveyor belt we recognise them instantly, with no doubt as to wether it is ours or not.
my mum picked up the wrong case coming back from Dubai, was not stopped at customs and did not realise the mistake until went to open it at home, we had to trail all the way back to Gatwick with said case which actually belonged to an Australian woman who had carried on without it, mums case was there at Gatwick and it was similar. Now we always check the name tag before leaving the airport.
