Hi shrewsgirl. I am sure you will love Corfu, we do and have been lots of times though we go farther south on the west coast. As dustypuss says Corfu town is worth a visit.
Have alook at this website (SOrry if it doesnt work, believe it or not that is the first time I have cut and paste)
http://www.sidari-corfu.net/
The island is very green and the people are very friendly.
The north east coast is very pretty, more cove like, but tend to have shingle beaches. I think Sidari has a sandy beach though as do the beaches on the west coast.
I think there is a water park not far from Sidari, but I havn't been so cant tell you what it is like.
To see the island its best to hire a car if you can. There are scooters for hire but I would advise against them as there a lot of accidents involing young inexperienced riders.
The tour companies offer excursions if you like that sort of thing, but its perfectly feasable to do it yourself, or just chill by the pool or on the beach.
Have you been to Greece before? if not you might not know about the plumbing. The drains are quite narrow so you cant flush toilet paper at all without causing a blockage. A bin is provided everywhere for used paper. It sounds a bit gross but you soon get used to it and everywhere we have been has been scrupulously clean. I tend to take plastic sanitary bags with me for this but you dont have to.
We were there in Early June for, I think, the 8th or 9th time. God willing we will return next year. LOL
Have a great holiday!!!!!
