I have a severe fear of flying. I am going to Turkey next week and despite the doctor prescribing diazepam I know that this won't really help. Does anyone have any successful tips on dealing with panic attacks or fear of flying in general? I'm determined this won't stop me from travelling but very distressed when it actually comes to getting on the plane!

yes the doctor will prescribe you with valium.

Diazepam is valium! That doesn't really have any effect whatsoever apart from giving me a glazed look! Tetjam I'm not afraid of dying, I'm a complete control freak and it panics me that I'm not actually at the controls and have no control over what happens.
Ignore Tetjam.

He is ABs current resident idiot.
^ Panic Button is the site bully. Look how he insults and victimises.
That's it. I'm tightening the thumb screws even more.
Have you tried drinking with the valium?
Of the doctor could prescribe you Beta blockers unless you have asthma??
Question Author
Actually I did try drinking with it once, it just had no effect other than normal when I drink! I don't have asthma but not sure beta blockers would help???
why not go by boat?

Can you believe I'm just as scared of sailing?! Like I said before, it's not the fear of being in the sky, rather the fear of not being in control of my destiny or fate....
doolaly I am the same to be honest and I got a flight soon 12 hours. I just pop the pills and get drunk. I am still scared but very passively. On a long haul flight back from Thailand I was so out of it I must have passed out and I woke up in 1st class. They then just left me there for the rest of the flight.
My friend is the same and his wife is Aussie, so they fly there quite a lot. he gets sleeping tablets from his doctor and takes half before the flight and if he walks up before the end of the flight takes another, not the best way but at least it gets him there. Maybe a mild sedative other than valium or diazipam

Or you could ask to sit with the pilot and have a go at the controls
check out the pilot to see if he has slitty eyes and looks like a kamikazee driver............if not, ur safe!

Keep off the tablets as u dont want to appear drugged on arrival......docs (too much over-prescribing)!

Have a great hol in Tkey (I always do).

Look at it pragmatically ...

1. Flying is statistically the safest means of travel.

2. You are more likely to have an accident on your way to the airport than you are whilst on your flight.

3. If you have a car accident, you have a stay in hospital, and a long, painful period of recovery. If you have a plane accident, you are instantly, and painlessly, incinerated, or smashed into teeny pieces.
