When I went travelling many years ago, I wish that I had kept a journal of all the time I was away. Regret that big time! There are nice hardback journal books around now. My friend kept one and we have had many laughs reading it 12 years later!!!!
Has he got a decent camera aswell?
Awww, does he want a travelling companion ???!!!!!

Got the camera and a companion!! Sorry
Thought about a journal but just don't think he would want to carry it about ,weight wise. Not convinced he would regularly jot stuff down.Trying to get him to send pc's etc back so that my 7 yr old grandson can keep track of him on a map.He and I might be the ones to compile a scrapbook! Thanks for suggestion anyway.

There are times, early on,. when he will feel really lonely and that he wants to come home. Write him a letter for emergency use only, telling him how proud you are of him, and that there is nothing he cannot get over.
Failing that, a Leatherman, but only if he always checks a bag in, or security will have it off him

make sure he knows how western union works.......at some point you will have to send him cash....I know, my daughter went 18months round the world....on her own....I spent the whole time on tenderhooks waiting to hear from her....I also made arrangments with the phone company to put her through reversing the charges....so even if she had no money she could stall phone me....
I found these items invaluable when I was away on my trip:
A middle of the range Swiss army knife (not sure about this item and airport security now though).
Comprehensive mini travel first aid kit: for example, when you are on an island in the middle of nowhere and you tread on some coral/a sea urchin etc!
Travel mosquito net: many beach huts have them but they are always full of holes.
A handful of passport photos: for travel passes/visa applications etc.
A sealed/sterile pack of syringes. In some foreign countries you really don't want to be using theirs!
Photocopies of important documents such as Passport and Visas etc. in case they gets lost/damaged/stolen.
