how long do you need on a passport to travel to the usa

travelling to new york then to las vegas next month my husbands passport runs out next july(09) do i need to renew this or is there enough to travel

Assuming that it's a UK passport, it only needs to be valid throughout the duration of your stay:

This could change next year though.

The new ESTA system rejects passports with less than 6 months validity - or did when it first came out. (haven't checked recently).

It becomes compulsory in January.

Usually has to be valid for the duration of your stay & for six months after your return.

When you get back why not get your husband to renew his passport? This can be done at anytime, but if done with 9 months or less before it runs out then the extra time is added to the passport
