could anyone advise me what would be the best currency to take to Goa-USD, Sterling or a Debit card?

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.If you take US$ you'll be hit for two lots of exchange costs so unless there's a very special reason for taking them (or you already have them maybe) I'd avoid this.
For the other two, it depends a bit where you change your currency and what card you have. A Nationwide card is just about always best.

I saw recently on a website (i'll try and find the link) that the best currency to take is Sterling. I'm off out there (for the 2nd time) at Christmas and will be taking �s. Unfortunately Indian Rupees can't be taken in or out of India. Make sure you have lots of pound coins with you for when you arrive at Dabolim airport as everyone seems to want tipping!!
