Driving across Europe
4 Answers
My partner and I are due to drive through Europe in the summer and holiday in the Scandinavian countries. We've got 2 dogs which will be with us in the car. They both have pet passports and we plan to take the fery from Harwich to Holland. Does anyone have any good tips on what to do/ what not to do, things to remember e.g. drive on the other side of the road etc. Neither of us have ever driven outside of the UK and we just want to be as best prepared with everything (not just the driving part) as we can. Any helpful tips will be much appreciated. thanks

thank you for your answer. The most we've driven in Britain has been 4hr stints before breaks. We would do the same on our way through Europe. Probably drive for 3 hrs, stop have a break, stretch legs and then swap driver.
We plan to take ferry over night and dock in Holland 8am. According to our TomTom from the Hook of Holland to Copenhagen it should take us 9hrs. We plan to drive this stretch of the journey without stopping off at any motels/Hotels but with before mentioned breaks. We would then be staying in Copenhagen for almost a week before moving on. In Sweden we will be visiting a lot of friends in different villages so that won't be a problem and the same for Norway.
The dogs love travelling by car so I think/hope that by giving them breaks they will be fine.
I will have a look at your link now. thank you

Your dog's should be fine with the breaks you have planned, providing they are not too big for your car. I regularly travel from the UK from Portsmouth to Caen, and drive right down to the South of France with my 2 dogs, both Jack Russels. I take regular breaks, and always carry water for them. I tend to take a couple of days to get down and the same back, usually camping on route (going different ways each way) I keep the air con on in the car at all times in summer, and usually let them have a swim in a river or too, though this does give the car a distinctive aroma!
Chuckle.... thanks Chaffinch, I can just imagine the mentioned aroma. What we do for our animals eh!!
Both dogs are staffies so there's plenty of room in the car for them. I don't however have aircon but I shall keep windows rolled down in the front so it'll be airy. We won't be going in the height of summer so shouldn't be baking temperatures anyway and with my luck of nice weather it'll probably be raining all the way :-)
