What is the best and most cost effective way of getting from Newcastle Upon Tyne to Lille in Northern France? I only want to go for a few days so the journey can't take too long!

well the choice is 2 fold... either eurostar , you can get good discounts if you book in advance or by coach but it will take 20 hours
It depends how many there are of you. If you're on your own it's better to go by train. If there are 4 of you it'll be cheaper to take the car. It'll take about 9 hours by car. As dfward says book early for crossing or eurostar to get good price.
Route 1:
Newcastle to Kings Cross by rail.
Walk across the road to St Pancras
St Pancras International to Lille Europe on Eurostar.
Total journey time = approx 5 hours.
For the cheapest fares book travel directly with Eurostar. (Return fares, for the entire journey from Newcastle to Lille, start at 83):

Route 2:
Newcastle to Paris CDG with easyjet. (Return fares start from around 46).
Direct TGV train (50 minute journey) from CDG Terminal 2 to Lille. (Pre-booked return fares start from 38.50)
