Blackpool
I watched Secret Millionaire on Sunday (Channel 4] Gary Eastwood went to Blackpool and the place seemed really desolate and run down! I know it was at the end of the season but the picture portrayed was very uninviting! I remember visiting Blackpool in the seventies and it was "buzzing" What is Blackpool really like now!

It is apparently about to get a very large sum of money to refurbish itself - good! And bookings for holidays are up on last year according to many landlords of B&B's in the area - many are fully booked for the Easter break and for some weeks after

a lot of the jobs are seasonal so visit blackpool in winter and you see a different place. i was in a shop in a side street off the front and the local dj from a pub on the front was trying (begging) the shop owner for some cigs and beer, he offered his cd player as security till his dole money was paid in his bank account.
the shop owner said people only see a happy place in summer but if they lived here it would open their eyes.
junkies begging for money, you name it they have it

Many English seaside resorts are all "gliiter" up front but can be very poor areas with little work, many people from outside coming in looking for work, and it can also attract drug addicts, drunks etc who want to to live there.
Many seaside towns also have an ageing population and the local council can be spending a fortune looking after these older people.
The other problem is that many people now go abroad for their holidays, and the holiday "season" in England can only last a few months (Easter till end of August). The rest of the year their income is very very low.
One other problem is that many of these seaside towns grew up in the Victorian era, and so the whole infrastructure of them (housing, shops, theatres etc) is crumbling
That is why Blackpool was deperate to get that huge Casino a few years ago, to halt its decline and to give it more "all year round" visitor numbers.

As a resident, I'd love to be able to contradict the rather poor reputation that Blackpool currently has, and the comments made.............unfortunately I am unable to do so.
Blackpool keeps being promised funds from various sources for regeneration and reinvention...........this will take time........and time is something which we may not have. The transitional phase will cause more upheaval and inconvenience for visitors and tourists (see current works to the sea-wall and main sewer) and see them deciding to go elsewhere; Blackpool will then have to work twice as hard to get them back.
The old Mecca has just been demolished in order to make way for a new campus of the Fylde College..........and guess what? The money promised for the new build seems to have disappeared.........so another prominent, ugly building site for the Borough Council to explain away.
Works are due to start on the Talbot Road gateway.........this will provide new Civic Buildings for Blackpool. So, no real construction, then......just modern offices for the snoopers and bean-counters.
The Council put all of its energies (and vast amounts of our Council Tax) into securing the 'Super-Casino' and failed.............there was NO Plan B !

Well I live in Blackpool (although not born here),
It looked like Gary was staying on the outskirts of Grange Park in Layton, which isn't a nice place! But like all area's you have your bad parts, I can sit here and say I don't think most of it is a bad in places but there are a lot of desolate and run down area's! There are however some lovely area's aswell. A TV Show like that is bound to show the worst area's anyway!

and Sparkler-the whole point of the program was that the millionaire was living on Jobseeker's allowance.......so of course he would not be in the more salubrious parts of town.I am sure most viewers would understand that.
