With that amount of lead time and considering the economy, you should be able to get pretty good rates at one of the hotels on the 'Strip'... however, when we go to Vegas we always staty at one of the Goldcoast Hotels (there are four in the chain, seen here: .http://www.orleanscasino.com/ ) (We live in the U.S., by the way).

A little out of the way but good value for huge, comfortable rooms. Thing is, you spend alot of your time walking the strip anyway... at least most tourists do. Tickets to the shows you might like to see (one of our favorites is the perennial Mystre Cirque du Soleil at Treasure Island) are available from many locations other than the venue itself... Welcome to the U.S.!
If you can afford the hotels on the strip, stay at one of them as you will save money getting back and forth to the strip. If you check travelocity.com or experdia.com or orbitz.com about once a month you will be able to see what specials they have on hotels so that when it gets closer to coming to America you should be able to find some type of special offer that will fit your budget. Try to get a room higher up and that faces the strip so you will have a view.
we are going back to las vegas in august for the fifth time and this time we are staying where we stayed last year which was the gold coast.. its a great hotel and it has a shuttle bus that drops off in the centre of the strip and it leaves the GC every 15 mins or so.. or you can walk to the rio and choose any one of there shuttle buses which drop off at about 4 or 5 places on the strip..these buses don't charge you anything but its nice to give the drivers a $ tip.you can get a suite in the gold coast for the same price as a normal room in the MGM or ceasars palace.. and in the suites at the GC theres coffee and a fridge etc. and the drinks are alot cheaper.. have a great time..
If you really want somewhere special to stay the wynn hotel is georgeous and the new part of the venetian is also great but it will cost alot of money ..if you really want to stay on the strip ballys is in about the best position and is not too expensive
We did the West Coast trip last year and stayed in the Flamingo. It was adequate but basic. Unlike most other US hotel rooms it had no mini bar or coffee making facilities. I gather this is so you don't spend too much time in the room and get into the casinos. For me the highlight of our stay was Freemont Street. As the youngsters would say "awesome"!!
