I would only take a couple of hundred pounds worth with me.
This is what I have always done on trips to USA, Australia and twice to NZ
Leave the rest of your hard earned cash in a UK visa debit current account. I keep the exchanged dollars as an emergency back up. I use my debit card as normal at ATMs ,shops etc during the holiday. Only over the last couple of days will I use the pre-exchanged dollars. Yes you will pay a transaction fee each time you use your card but I prefer this to the constant anxiety of carrying large amounts of precious cash around.
I always make a note of the 24hr lost/stolen number for my bank and let the bank know where and when I am going too to avoid card being 'blocked'
Have a fabulous trip
