Why do some train stations have signes saying "gold zone", "purple zone" ,"orange zone" etc, etc.

I believe it is to do with where the sections of the trains will be when they arrive at the platform.  They sometimes might say 'first class carriages will be in the gold zone' so first class passengers know which end of the platform to wait at.  But saying that I haven't heard that in a long time, maybe they don't bother so much anymore and its a bit of a relic.
