Haven't been with Canvas, been with Eurocamp and Keycamp, try comparng prices with them. Also, you can check individual camp sites on line too before you decide where to go.
Try these http://www.vacansoleil.co.uk/

they use many of the same sites and Canvas, Keycamp etc and their vans are of the same quality
We use KC every year and Canvas are on the site we use - the vans look great, the tents are good and ofc the site activities vary
We go to Berny Riviere in Compiegne

When our kids were small we booked a Canvas Hol attracted by the 'kids club and entertainment'. It was deeply disappointing. The tents were fine but set so close together you couldn't break wind without waking the whole row. The kids club comprised the youth who did the cleaning trudging down to the beach with the kids, then trudging back. Because child protection / health and safety laws are different abroad, you have no guarantees about your child's safety in these clubs and inexperienced kids are often in charge. We asked the youth if he could bring our return sailing forward by a day - he charged £50 for this, which was not the actual ferry payment - we found we had to stump up at the ferry port, so the cash went in the lad's pocket. Complained to the company and got some very shirty scottish geezer whose attitide was 'tough luck'. Didn't leave a good feeling about Canvas Holidays.

As others have pointed out, many companies use the same campsites - moreover, if you get a copy of the Michelin guide / camping caravanning in France, you will find many sites rent out directly their own mobile homes and chalets, and this is far better value than the UK companies.

You have absolutely no proof of this at all. Most, if not all, companies will charge you for this facility. you chose to leave early, so why would you not be charged? Maybe excessively so, but a charge will be incurred as it's at least a phone call
I agree with you on the children's clubs to a point, although where we stay there are at least 2 helpers - an absolute MSUT IMO 'just in case. From blurb on web sites, although young, the helpers there will have some childcare experience, even if it is very little. they are after all only there under a supervisory capacity and in my op, parents should be staying with their children during such activities anyway as they are not provided as a baby sitting service
The tents are not close 'that' together on most/many sites, certainly not the ones we use regularly
Keycamp, Canvas, Eurocamp etc etc are all one and the same
Hmm, OJ, very interesting. So you can remotley detect my receipts filing system with your god-like powers?
I am absolutely confident of my own experiences and have no need to defend any of my perceptions or experiences to you. However I know I am as entitled to them as you are to yours, so what say you back off and/ or boil your head to get some of the pomposity out of it?
Do you get sworn at a lot in civilian life?
The OP asked for opinions based on experiences, not for you to wade in and try to impose your own version of reality.
Work for Canvas Holidays do you? Well, someone's got to I suppose.
