Hi All, Later this year I'm going on holiday to Chicago but don't know how much medical insurance to take out. I've been on various sites that will quote me for anything from $50 to $8 million. Can anybody advise me as to how much I should cover myself for.

$50 won't even buy you a prescription.

I'd advise the maximum anyway. And I think you want travel insurance, not medical insurance. Medical insurance is for residents, not visitors.
