Inland places like Wedderburn and Lumsden have accommodation. I haven't stayed at any of them, though, so can't say if they're any good. (They are usually okay three-star places, and motels often have kitchens in the rooms.)

if you're travelling at school holiday time (especiall December-February) you might want to book ahead occasionally; ther est of the year you should be ok. NZers drive around quite a bit so there's usually accommodation in most medium-sized centres.
