which uk cities are best visited with overnight stay?

Which cities in the UK are worth spending a night or two overnight? We live in London so thats out of question. I've been to Birmingham and not thought there was much to do there but for the usual shops you find everywhere.
York perhaps? Oxford? Cambridge? Bath? Are these cities that require an overnight stay to see their attractions?

There's a lot to do in York, just had five days there.

OK I know there is the market and yorvik museum. What else is there to do in York?

castle museum is good, the medieval streets are well preserved though rather given over to tat. York Minster is excellent. Definitely worth a couple of nights.

Depending exactly what your interests are, Bath, Canterbury, Chester all have good history and architecture.

Edinburgh is a good choice for a couple of days.
Many cities/towns can be "done" in a day but why not explore the surrounding area?
York,Chester,Ludlow,Bath,Stirling,Norwich,Pic
kering,Bath,Dartmouth
and Wells are all places I liked.
....And West Bromwich of course.

I would say that if your willing to go and take time finding places of interest to you then almost every city would be worth visiting.

However, you live in London so possiablly going to somewhere which is very different to London but still has a variety of things to do and places to go.

- Chester - Although isn't quite, you will enjoy the wide range of shops in and around the city centre. The club's are fairly decent providing clubs are something you enjoy/like. There is a large selection of pubs open from 12 mid-day but there are some which open before 12 midday. Some will be serving hot and cold food and also have tea and coffee avaliable ***but if your drinking tea/coffee then a cafe would be cheaper***

Also within a short distance on public transport or walking, many activites can be also found such as bowling and chinese all you can eat buffets ect.

For accomodation you are maybe best looking on Preimer inn - online? as they have very cheap hotel room prices and would prob be the cheapest within the city centre / close to.

The train station is also very busy throughout both day and night therefore should you go via train, you would not be waiting very long for a train to Chester from most places and am unsure for the best route as I dont use trains often but maybe it would be -- London to Manchester, then Manchester to Chester. There are 2 trains minimum per hour from Manchester to Chester and both routes take roughly 1 hour depending which route is taken, ***Arriva trains wales is best out of the 2***

Look for a chester tour guide on google if you are wanting more information as they will be a tourist info which you will be able to ring and speak with ? might be abit more faster and give direct answers for questions.

Cheap hotels in a number of easy accessable locations *just need to do some online research and same as any break, plan all details carefully and take time to make sure is all confirmed ect to avoid any problems*

Trains from several Manchester city centre stations to a large choice of places in the northwest and most places within northwest will mostly be very cheap during off-peak especially for a return ticket and also most train companys offer more than 1 train every hour so you are not likely to be waiting for long periods of time if using the train.

Bus services will be found for almost any destination in Greater Manchester, mostly departing from the city centre bus terminus' and depending where you are travelling to, there is a number of places for information should you require any.

Most bus companys offer day tickets which will save you ££ and have tickets such as FAMILY DAYRIDER which 3 adults 4 children can use all day for a unlimited amount of times for £7 (90% sure is correct price) but also you dont have to have 3 adults 4 children can have just 2 adults 2 kids but would work out cheaper than £4.30 any bus day riders for every person.

Metrolink - Quicker than bus for places such as Burys world famous market

Go to Edinburgh in August. The Festival and the fringe are top notch.

I liked it so much I went back again the year after.
