Where's the best area to go in the Dominican Republic for a holiday?

myself, my partner and his parents are planning a trip for next year! we have read up reviews but still cant get an answer. we want to go somewhere with lots to do, good nightlife and nice beaches and if possible not far from the airport?

Here's a good review of hotels near the airport in Santo Domingo...

Santo Domingo will offer about all you have listed in your query... however, if you can, rent a car then take the day trip to San Cristobal or other Southwest Coast small towns. The beaches are less crowded, the natives are friendly and the food more nearly what the Dominicans usually serve. Not much to do except in San Cristobal, but Google up Playa Palenque and San Rafael...
