Holiday in Jersey in August

I have booked a short holiday (9 days) in Jersey and will be travelling singly. I have had differing advice about not hiring a car (the Explorer bus goes all over the island) and another friend who says You should hire a car.

Any thoughts on this? I want a relaxing holiday (not necessarily sitting round a pool or on a beach sunbathing) but any ideas of "must sees". I have had a look for a travel guide but haven't been able to find a decent one yet. Can anyone recommend a reasonable guide with places to visit and maps of the area?

where are you staying? the island is small and you wont clock up many miles in 9 days, however we went there last year and although the busses seemed to be all over the place, most of them left and terminated in st hellier. We had a hire car, but parking is on the expensive side and you have to pay all of the time; there are no "free" spaces really

I was wondering if I should get a car for a couple of days to do some "off the beaten track" journeys.

The busses do run all over the Island, but if you decide to hire a car, just hire a small one as the roads are quite narrow,many without pavements, but the drivers are very good ( max. speed limit is 40mph ) You can buy a Jersey Pass for £59 for 6 days which will take you into most attractions. Gerald Durrells wild life park, The german tunnels, Mont Orgueil castle, Elizabeth Castle, Living Legend, Samares Manor and the Jersey Museum is good too,( not Stuffy )
St. Helier shops do not open on a Sunday,it is a good idea to get the bus to St. Helier as parking is not too good there.
You will get a map of the Island and a small guide book when you arrive at the airporrt
My husband & I are going to Jersey for the sixth time at the end of August, we love the place !!

If you are staying in St Helier DONT hire a car. Anywhere else maybe yes but St Helier no.

The central bus station is in St Helier and all the buses radiate from there. You can get a bus to all parts of the island from St Helier and they are very prompt and reliable.

I went to Jersey 2 years ago for the first time and stayed in St Helier and used buses to get everywhere. It was fine.

As I said in my answer above, this is a good web site to find things to do in Jersey

They do a great "whats on" guide you can download.

Choose "request a brochure" on the right.

In the "drop down" select "Whats on guides"

Then download the April/May issue or the June/July issue. May be worth downloading both as they cover all sorts of things.

You can also select "maps and guides" from the dropdown and download various maps and guides (as you would expect)

I've always found the buses do the trick coupled with the odd taxi fare which works out far cheaper than car hire. Do make sure you carry health insurance because the UK government has scrapped the old reciprocal arrangement and so Jersey will now charge you if you need treatment.

Also as I said in my other append, pop up to Fort Regent in St Helier.

This is a huge fort on a hill in the centre of St Helier, but from the town you can hardly see it and I am sure many visitors dont even know it is there (it is not promoted much in the tourist guides)

It is now a leasure centre, but the huge outer walls of the fort are still there and you can still walk round them, and it is free to get in.

You also get great views of the whole of St Helier from there.

One other thing.

Right opposite the bus station (near the statue) is a tourist information shop.

You can get all sorts of advice there, plus buy various maps and guides.

I love Jersey and most of the above is right. no point having a car in St Hellier, I just phoned Hertz and they bought a car around to my hotel when I needed it and let leave it athe airport on the way home. Nine days is a lot and to be honest you would cover most of the island within a sort time , all 52 beaches. Underground German tunnels a must.

- Get crafty - Go on a pottery, candle-making or leatherwork course, which are very popular in Jersey.
- Golf at La Moye in St Brelade and Royal Jersey in Grouville
- Swimming at beaches to either side of St Helier in the south; stretching 5km (3 miles) west around St Aubin's Bay and east to La Roque Point are the most picturesque
Watersports - windsurfing and water skiing are best attempted at one of the island's most popular and beautiful beaches, St Brelade's Bay, west of St Aubin.
- West coast surfing - isitors rave about the surfing found on the west coast; particularly off the sweeping 8km (5-mile) sandy beach on St Ouen's Bay.

Thanks for your response Joemichael. Now I am worried.
I don't cycle, I don't eat fish; I'm not a strong swimmer so any watersports are out.
What the heck am I going to do for 9 days?

Ah yes ... take a load of paperback books and relax ...... :-)
