Shoppingwise not exciting but I think Philly is where the big outlet mall called Franklin Plaza is. The art gallery is good and there are tourist buses that take you around (purple buses, or purple line - something like that)?
Within the city there is the Liberty Plaza which is where the Liberty Bell is. Also within the city the docks area has been tidied up and is worth visiting as is the tower on City Hall.
Outside the city, King of Prussia mall is the biggest in US and Franklin Mills is an outlet mall to the north of the city. However you really need a car to visit both.
A bit further afield you have Lancaster County which is where the Amish are based and Hershey World. Alternatively Six Flags in New Jersey is an easy day out.

Because Philadelphia was the original and first capital of the US, Americans thrive on it. So its more than just a Liberty Bell, its a whole experience that seeks to re-create the issues of those historical times. Takes best part of a day to 'do' if you like that sort of thing.
Agree with King of Prussia, but a car is a 'must', not a 'really need'.
