We will shortly be going to Lake Como in Italy for a week and for one day we visit Lugano in Switzerland.
Do I need to buy Swiss Francs for the visit or are Euros widely acceptable ?

No, any time OH travels into Switzerland he has to change euros into Swiss francs in order to buy food, etc.
PS to save buying it in advance, you can just go an ATM though, with your debit card, and draw out as many as you need when you are in Lugano. Bear in mind you will probably pay a fee (unless you are with Nationwide) to draw out money in Europe wherever you go.
