we are off to france tomorrow, and my hubby cannot find his plastic card bit of his driving licence, he can only find the paper to it, will this be ok ?

If you're taking your own car, the official answer is still 'No' but , unless you get stopped for a traffic violation (or because you've been involved in an accident) it's very unlikely that anyone would ask to see the licence. (It's probably more important to ensure that you're carrying compulsory items, such as a hi-vis jacket and reflective warning triangle).
