Where in New York City are the main tourist attractions & what's the easiest way of travelling between them? Which website or travel company would you recommend for good flights-&-accommodation packages for NYC?

New York City is made up of 4 distinct areas: Manhatten, Bronx, Queens and Staten Island. New Jersey is nearby but is not part of New York City.

Manhatten is an island, and is where most of the tourist attractions many. Many people visit New York but probably rarely venture off Manhatten (except to fly in and out).

There are things in the other areas, but I think it is true to say most of the things are on Manhatten: The Empire State Building, Times Square, Broadway, Statue of Liberty (off shore), Twin towers were there etc etc.

To be honest from your very general questions I think you need to buy a guide book, or at least search for some "New York tourist" web sites and rewad up on it.

for first-timers, you'll be fine just sticking to Manhattan. Look at Ground Zero, the Metropolitan Museum, Empire State building or Top of the Rock (viewpoints from skyscraper tops), Central Park, Broadway shows, shops and restaurants everywhere (remember taxes/tips will be in addition to the price displayed), and maybe take a Circle Line cruise round the island.

The tour buses are great and you can hop on and off and get passes over a few days with additional money off vouchers. I did four tours in one day, uptown and Harlem, downtown, Brooklyn (walked back over the bridge) and one at night where they take you to the Hulton Ferry Landing in Brooklyn at night to look back over the NY skyline all lit up.

Some of the guides are fantastic and you get so much more info than if you just went yourself.

My tips, so the Empire State really early in the morning and on a weekday if poss and Top of the Rock at night when everything is lit up.

The carriage ride in Central Park was good fun and there is a mini zoo in there with a very cool show off polar bear.

We went on the free Staten Island ferry to see the Statue of Liberty after walking right the way down from near Time Sq to the ferry via 5th Avenue passed the Empire State and Macys, Fashion District, Greenwich Village, Little Italy, China Town, Ground Zero and Wall St. Very long walk and it was about 90 degrees but great. We did get the subway back up though!

Grand Central Station is well worth a look as well.

We got a great deal on Expedia. Watch for the really cheap deals end of summer though as it's often when the temperature and humidity is evil there.

We went at that time and it was in the 90s but bearable though most locals we asked said that was pretty tame compared to how it can get at that time of year.
