London Heathrow to Melbourne, Aus.
I may, 40% certain, have the chance to go to Melbourne for a fortnight's holiday in 3 weeks' time. Am soooo excited - the BF is going for business and if I pay for my own flight, I can go with him.
I've had a quick shufty on ticket sites - the cheapest return seems to be from around £800. Does that sound right? Just for flight only?
anyone got any recommendations for purchasing tickets?

I have been to Melbourne. If possible visit the old jail/museum

You can go in the small cells and they have stories on the walls about some of the prisoners e.g Ned Kelly. Some of the rooms have quite a chilly atmosphere. Well worth a visit (if you like that sort of thing).

When comparing ticket prices, be careful to ensure that all taxes and charges are included. (On long haul flights such charges can often come to over £100, so it's important to check that you're really being quoted inclusive prices). At £788 return (which is available on most dates) Qantas might appear to be a bit dearer than some of the fares that others have come up with, but that fare does include all charges, whereas others may not. (Similarly, Cathay Pacific's £787.10 includes all charges).
Also check carefully on the number of stops and the total flight duration. Some low fares involve multiple stops or travel spread over several days.

That last post reminded me of arriving in Sydney. The immigration very large lady said "Do you have an electronic razor?" Me: "No". Lady (incredulous): "Well, how do you think you are going to get into Australia without an electronic razor". I am well baffled by now, wondering why nobody had warned me about needing a razor.
I suddenly realised she was saying electronic visa! and quickly showed her my magic number!

Try zuji.com or just google it and a whole list of sites should appear, and you'll probably find a really reasonably-priced ticket. For accommodation, I would suggest this: http://roomorama.com/short-term-rentals/London
Roomorama provides short term rentals, it's very affordable and cheaper than a hotel. It's just like a home away from home, perfect for the two of you!

Roomorama is an online marketplace for short term rentals. They're perfect for you, since you're booking quite last minute and hotels would cost a bomb or would be fully booked by now. Roomorama provides you with a wide option for a place to stay. It's like a home away from home. Enjoy!

Thanks Julian - but it is only a flight I shall need - accommodation is all sorted and paid for - the BF has a hotel suite booked for him by his company which I am able to share. And a hire jeep for the fortnight to explore all those beaches! Lucky me or what?!!!!
I will try zooji.com though, thanks.
