15 to 20% - most New Yorkers just double the tax.

At a bar, leave 50 cents to $1 per drink.

I’m sure this is just a one-off, but if you’re sitting down to eat, be sure to view your bill before you pay.  We went to a restaurant for a quick lunch and the waiter tried to get us to pay at our table by simply quoting us the cost – when we queried it, he’d already included a 20% tip in this quote.  The service had been appalling as well so needless to say we asked for a simple bill to add our own tip at our discretion.
