Why some people will not holiday in the UK

Why is it that some people consider holidaying in the UK' 'not a proper holiday'? I have actually heard that statement many times. They have no idea what the UK has to offer. From Cornwall and Devon where there are some fantastic beaches, right up through to Scotland and all the places in between.
They usually come up with the excuse that 'well, it's just as cheap to go abroad'. So? Does that mean it's better? That is a load of rubbish anyway.

I prefer holidays in the UK. Cornwall and Devon are lovely and I would like to go to Scotland as well. I think its to do with the weather and also the cost. You can book 2 weeks in Spain for the price of a weekend in the UK and usually things work out cheaper abroad.

I come from Devon and although it`s lovely I have seen so many "grockles" washed out of their campsites with appalling weather, I don`t blame them if they don`t want to go back.

Always holidayed in the UK, have seen some lovely places. The idea of lazing by a pool or lolling on a beach in searing temperatures holds no magic for me.

It is often cheaper to holiday abroad. I paid £1500 for 2 weeks all inc in Turkey, with a water park on site. a weekend in centre parcs would cost us up to £1200.

Saying that though, i do still enjoy holidaying in the UK, we have a few weekends away in UK and sometimes a week. There are some lovely areas, i just wish the weather was more predicatble

I think maybe for some people going abroad still represents something exotic and exciting, far from their everyday lives. Staying in the Uk may sometimes remind people how close they are to home and doesn't have the same distancing affect

I still find there is a certain 'romance' of getting on a plane (even if it is a budget airline) and jetting off! However I also really like holidaying in this country and, yup, there are loads of places not too far away to explore and enjoy

it's mainly down to the weather i think. you can't guarantee that your precious two week annual holiday won't be wall to wall sun in the uk whereas you can if you venture abroad (well, more or less guarantee it).
we're lucky in that we spend about 12 weeks abroad each year and about the same touring in britain. this is a lovely country with some spectacular places and i'm so glad we've had the opportunity to see so much of it, but if i was limited to just two or three weeks then i would be wanting some warmth and sun.

well because i live in spain now, i only enjoy travelling to the north coast for my hols, eg cantabria, as its got a kind of british ambience

I like to holiday both in the UK and the overseas, but it is cheaper to go overseas so I can understand why people with families take overseas holidays, especially if they want hotel holidays and sunshine and sand. I don't go on holiday for the sunshine and beaches - never have done but love to sample different cultures and food and peole watch.

There are fanastic beaches in the UK if you like walking on them and just enjoying the scenery, but they are not so good for a day on the beach with kids because our weather is unpredictable.

You can get cheap holidays abroad that are much better than what you can get in Britain for the same price and with much better service and accommodation.

What really puts me off these days is the whole hassle of airports. I just can't be bothered with it all.

I think you should view both domestic and foreign holidays on their merits.

If you are looking for Blackpool with guarenteed weather - as in 'Benidorm', then fine, but I enjoy other countries for their culture and language, and their differences.

Saying UK holidays are not 'proper' is the same mind-set as people who don;thave a television acting as though they lead somehow better more fulfilling lives - it's pretentions pants, and it's not true!

I usually find that it is people that have never been abroad that are dismissive of those that do go abroad on holidays. I am not saying this is you david. If these people have not experienced a holiday abroad then they really aren't in a place to comment.

I am going back again to the North York Yorks to a holiday cottage this year because I love it. It suits our lifestyle now and we can take the dog!!

With all the airport strikes in Spain about to start I`m staying put here in Bournemouth.

Oh for the days when it was easy to travel by air.

It's a total nightmare these days. I get to the destination feeling worn out and then fly home and feel worn out again. Any benefit the holiday may have had quickly disappears!!

I think that the opinion a lot of people have that holidaying abroad is cheaper is greatly exaggerated. It is not neccessarily true. If you plan you can easitly do it a lot cheaper in the UK. The added bonus is you don't have to put up with being sat around in an airport bored out of your mind for hours, surrounded by riff raff wearing footy shirts and tracky bottoms, swilling beer down them as if their was no tomorrow, talking very loudly and discussing how they are going to get smashed every night.

lottie, that's why we love our caravan - no more airports, our own bed each night, move on when we want to, total relaxation.
we're contemplating a trip to australia next year but i'm really not sure either of us want to do the whole airport thing again, for one thing i don't think i could squeeze all my clothes into the baggage allowance having been used to just shoving everything into the caravan.

we have a fabulous coast line here but the weather is so inclement
