Cambridge is a shopper’s paradise, with a vast amount of independent shops and unique boutiques to explore, and has been described as one of the most beautiful cities in Britain. Famous for its River Cam on which you can go punting whilst enjoy the scenic surroundings.

Shopping in Cambridge:

From department stores to shopping centres and traditional markets, Cambridge prides itself for having plenty to boast about. The local markets have been trading on the well known Market Square since Saxon times. On Sundays there is a thriving famers market, which sells local organic produce, whereas during the week as well as fruit and vegetables you will find books and clothes, so if you’re looking for a bargain this could be the perfect place.

Prepare to be bowled over by the variety and range of the city’s department stores. The Grand Arcade is the apple in Cambridge city’s eye and is bursting with popular department stores, which include, John Lewis, Marks & Spencer and Debenhams. So if you know what you’re looking for you’re sure to find it here. As well as selecting designer labels you can also pick up something to eat to give you more energy for what else the city has to offer. The Grand Arcade has its own car park off the Corn Exchange; also it’s convenient for the nearby Drummer Street bus station and leads out into the Lion Yard shopping centre to the north.

Other shopping centres include the Beehive Centre, which can be found off Coldhams Lane and includes shops such as Asda, Powerhouse and Harvey’s. The Lion Yard shopping centre is set in the heart of Cambridge, which includes a huge variety of retail outlets and also houses the city library if you’re looking to read up on some local history.

Things to do in Cambridge:

Cambridge has much to offer from its beautiful structural churches to historical museums, educational day trips to local theatres or cinemas. However people travel from afar to enjoy one of the most popular ways to see the famous bridges and colleges along the river Cam. Punting can be a private tour, where you can sit back, relax and enjoy your scenic surroundings together or you can share a chauffeured punt with others and even participate in the steering for a more hands on approach.

There are many tours available, so depending on what areas of the river you want to explore you can choose the tour or route that best suits you, and maybe stop off and have a picnic while absorbing the outstanding architecture both old and new. Why not take a walk through the well preserved ancient city centre of medieval streets, college courts, gardens and bridges and soak up the compact cosmopolitan ambiance of the city.

The city centre is compacted, with everything at your fingertips so take a leisurely stroll through the old-fashioned streets or if you’re feeling more active why not hire a bicycle. There is a large network of cycle routes, and the city centre is a pedestrian zone from 10am till 4pm so you are safe to discover what Cambridge has to offer at your own leisure.

Cambridge is easy to get to by road, rail or air - just 50 minutes from central London and 20 minutes from London Stansted Airport. There is so much to see in a day so why not stay a few nights in a Cambridge hotel, guest house or B&B and explore the market towns and country houses around the city.

The city also offers a market, open 6 days a week. Selling food and clothes as well as many other goods including souvenirs of the experience Cambridge offers. Sunday’s market also has craft stalls and a farmer’s market if you’re looking for something a little bit extra.
