The company claims over 90 years of flying in the UK. British Airways can trace its origins back to almost to the birth of civil aviation. The first ever commercial flight in august 1919 between London and Paris was flown by the forerunner company, Aircraft Transport and Travel Limited (AT&T), to what is now British Airways.

Probably the thing most people associate with British Airways is Concorde. This iconic air craft was first flown commercially between London and Bahrain in January 1976 and was the symbol of luxury and wealth for nearly thirty years. One of the most popular routes for Concorde was London to New York and many used it for weekend trips due to the short flying time. The fastest transatlantic crossing was in February 1996 when it completed the New York to London flight in 2 hours 52 minutes and 59 seconds.

In November 1986 a British Airways Concorde flew around the world, covering 28,238 miles in 29 hours, 59 minutes. Concorde, unfortunately, was ahead of its time and so eventually its popularity fell as costs spiralled. The final scheduled commercial flight was from JFK operated. BA’s fleet of seven aircraft were subsequently dispersed for preservation at various sites with one remaining at Heathrow.

British Airways prides itself on its Green image and were the first airline to offer their customers carbon offsetting. They are the only airline to be included in phase one of the UK Emissions Trading Scheme.

In 1992 British Airways became the first airline to report on their environmental performance. They realise that flying is economically and socially vital but also that there is a great need to minimise the impact flying has on the planet. Projects around waste, air and noise pollution and carbon offsetting are high on their agenda.

British Airways has a heritage centre, based at Heathrow, which is open to the public and contains many valuable and historic items from the company’s past.
