Holiday To US State Of Georgia Could Be Top Trip For Twitchers

Many of us simply want two weeks on the beach but some would like more interest on their annual holiday. Many travel companies are now looking at incorporating wildlife into their packages. One of the most popular is a bird watching holiday; although the UK has some amazing and varied birdlife some of us want to see more.

A holiday to the US state of Georgia may be of interest to twitchers, according to the area's tourist board. The Colonial Coast Birding Trail, which is available to follow for 100 miles, is home to over 300 species of birds, it claims. Salt marshes and old rice fields are among the 18 different sites available to visit.

Don't expect to see most of these birds on a single visit. The birds you see will depend greatly on when and where you visit. Some birds can be seen throughout the year. Others are migratory and travel long distances from their breeding grounds to wintering areas.

"A wide range of winged life can be discovered, from an eagle over the Melon Bluff Preserve to an endangered wood stork silently fishing," commented a spokesman. Many places of historical importance from the 18th and 19th century also form part of the trail.

Georgia is also an area keen on conservation; many of the state's most beautiful and fragile creatures, like indigo snakes, manatees and red-cockaded woodpeckers, are threatened as their habitats vanish.

Bird fans wishing to view a wider range of wildlife might also want to go on the Plantations and Pines Trail, which goes from the east to the west of the state, stopping off at attractions such as the Sea Turtle Centre in Jekyll Island and the Okefenokee National Wildlife refuge.

Georgia is located in the south-east of America, on the Atlantic coast. It is known as the Peach State and is famous for its music particularly Rhythm and Blues.
