People In UK 'Will Shop Until They Holiday'

We all look forward to holidays. Whether it is a two week stretch in the sun or a weekend city break they cannot come soon enough for some of us. And you just know you have got nothing to wear in your wardrobe so you need to have a major shopping spree before you go.

It seems that we are prepared to leave things to the last minute, though, when it comes to holiday shopping. Those going away over the bank holiday break will start shopping for it ten days in advance, new research has suggested.

According to M&S Money, two million people looking to pick up bargains on clothes, foreign currency and travel insurance will hit the shops in the run-up to their next break. Indeed, the firm has stated that they will see a 60 per cent upturn in business as holiday bookings go up by 40 per cent. The travel money manager for M&S Money stated that Britons like to get on top of things when getting ready for their holidays.

"Waiting until ten days before a holiday means that these bargains can be bagged at the same time as purchasing holiday essentials like travel money," he said.

By shopping around for the best exchange rates, travellers can save on travel money purchase, and avoid paying over the odds at airports where rates can be uncompetitive. Brits are savvy when it comes to holiday shopping, from seeking out the best sun cream deals to picking up those end-of-summer sale items.

Holiday spending statistics from the report:

•    A fifth (21%) of holidaymakers splash out on swimwear at least once a year.
•     42% treat themselves to new holiday clothes every year.
•    58% spend up to £500 per person for a week’s holiday abroad.
•    Over two-thirds (68%) take up to £300 spending money with them.
