Short Breaks Long On Adventure

With more and more of us going away for two or three shorter breaks rather than the one two week annual holiday, we need to pack more in for our money and time. Short adventure holidays are booming says a specialist leading high street travel agent.

Most peoples' idea of a short break generally involves pottering around the major cities of Europe or America, taking in the sites, cafes and galleries and maybe a little shopping. And these types of short break are still very popular; however, some of us are hankering for more excitement for our money.

The travel agent has reconsidered this concept and now offers a variety of adventure holidays tailored for the type of holiday maker who doesn't mind getting their clothes dirty but has little time.

Ranging from four to eight days, holidaymakers can visit countries in the Middle East, Africa, Asia, North America and Europe. The brevity of the breaks gives little idea of the range of activities on offer, from snorkelling with killer whales to tracking gorillas in Uganda.

"When we first launched a handful of short adventure holidays five years ago we were amazed at the response," said the firm’s managing director.

"Short breaks are now a hugely popular area – some people use a long weekend as their first taster of an adventure holiday, while others simply want maximum action with minimum time out of the office."

Popular activities:

•    Skiing and snowboarding – these types of break are especially popular with many resorts offering year round glacier skiing.
•    Mountain sports – including mountain biking, scrambling, coasteering, walking, ice and rock climbing.
•    Water sports – including white water rafting, canoeing, wind surfing, kayaking, sailing.
•    Wildlife – see animals in their native environment. Safaris can be done on foot, by car or even by hot air balloon.

Short breaks are not necessarily short on risks however, and holidaymakers should always remember to take comprehensive travel insurance with them even for a weekend away.
