Spencer House

Spencer House has been recognised as one of the most ambitious aristocratic town houses ever built in London and is, today, the city's only great eighteenth-century private palace to survive intact. The House was built for an ancestor of Diana, Princess of Wales and has a splendid terrace and garden with magnificent views of Green Park.

Spencer House was conceived as a showcase of classical design but it was also designed for pleasure and a festive theme runs through the decoration of all the many state rooms which were used for receptions and family gatherings. The first Earl Spencer and his wife were prominent figures in London society, and during their lifetime Spencer House was often the setting for lavish entertainments. Their descendants, notably the fourth and sixth Earls, both of whom served as Lord Chamberlain of the Royal Household, continued this tradition.

The state rooms in the House have been restored to the former splendour of their late eighteenth-century appearance and are decorated with distinguished paintings and furniture. This provides a magnificent setting for private and corporate events, receptions, civil weddings, recitals, meetings and presentations. Charitable events are welcomed at Spencer House.

Spencer House is open to the public for viewing every Sunday (except during January and August) from 10.30 am - 5.45 pm. Access is by guided tour, which lasts approximately 1 hour. Tours begin at regular intervals and the last admission is at 4.45 pm. The maximum number of visitors on each tour is 20.

Timed tickets may be purchased in person from 10.30 am on the day. Tickets for individuals are available on a first-come-first-served basis and cannot be booked in advance.
