There Is More To Tenerife Than Sun, Sea And Sand.
Tenerife is known as an extremely popular destination for those of us looking for some sun. It is undoubtedly a warm place to visit being one of the Spanish owned Canary Islands off the coast of Africa. However, it has much more to offer than beautiful beaches.
The Island’s landscape is varied with beautiful beaches and massive mountain ranges. The oldest mountains rose from the Atlantic Ocean by volcanic eruption around 12 million years ago. This has shaped most of the geology of the Island and the last record eruption was over a century ago.
Tenerife is the largest of the seven Canary Islands and its highest point, Mount Tiede, at over 3,700 meters is the highest point in all of Spain.
The Playa de las Americas, which is on the southern coast and along with Los Cristianos are probably the most well known resorts. The area surrounding the two towns known as Costa Adeje has many leisure opportunities besides sea and sand, such as quality shopping centres, golf courses, restaurants, waterparks, and animal parks.
In the more lush and green north of the island the main development for tourism has been in the town of Puerto de la Cruz. The town itself has kept some of its old-harbour town charm mixed with northern European influences.
The most visited attraction is the Teida National Park with its extensive pine forests it is a stark contrast to the volcanic landscape at the summit of Mount Tiede. The crater of the now extinct volcano is accessible either by foot or by cable car and from the top you can see breathtaking views of some of the other Canary Islands.
Loro Parque was originally a Parrot Park and still houses over 300 species of parrot. It has now grown into Tenerife’s second biggest attraction after Mount Teide. The park boasts an amazing range of animal shows, Aquarium with Shark tunnel, Gorillas, Chimpanzees, Tigers, Jaguars, Flamingos, Alligators, Tortoises, Orchid House, Gambian Market, a 'NaturaVision' Cinema and the world’s largest Penguinarium with a reproduction Antarctic climate within which 12 tons of snow falls a day.
