It's almost beyond belief and I really dont see how anyone with religious convictions could carry out such atrocities. What goes through the minds of these people?

I also am loathe to relate this to mainstream Islam. This is a bunch of folk who do not value the human rights of women and feel they are entitled to do what they wish to them. As morally corrupt individuals, whatever religion they claim to be part of, isn't the main factor. I think there was little doubt what would happen to the girls if they were not rescued immediately. It is this attitude of not valuing other humans' basic rights that needs to be eradicated, not their chosen religious beliefs.
Agree with the answers already said. I would like to see the brave soul who stands up and says this action is justified and right.
We knew of this when it happened. We knew they had been forced into religious conversion and we knew they had been forced into arranged marriages.
Nothing new here.
What would be new though is the news that something tangible has been done to rescue these girls. You can write a million petitions and letters demanding their release, they all mean diddly squat to Boko Harum. They have been doing everything they are doing with impunity.
My suggestion is to not bother with fighting the ground troops. Send in the elite forces and target every single high ranking official and work down to every single officer. That way the ground troops will get the message. And along with that cut off their supply of money they would be wiped out in a year.
Unfortunately there isn't a country with the knacker to do it.

Islam isn't condoning it anymore than the Christans are condoning it. It is a terror tactic in a civil war. True that Boko Haram are Islamic, but they are also terrorists. Your question is like asking why did the Pope condone the IRA blowing people up?
The circumstances in Northern Nigeria are unique. The Christians are seen as remnants of Nigeria's colonial past, and therefore a target. The kidnapping of these Christian girls was a sectarian act and a in a civil war. Kidnapping their daughters is the equivalent of stealing their land or possessions. Boko Haram Are allied with ISIS, who consider themselves as in Jhiad (Holy War) so trying to make sense of what they do is pointless, they are irrational. Blaming all Muslims for the deeds of Boko Haram is also irrational.

No it is not, I did not ask if the head of Islam condoned it.
These people, including those in Islamic state do this sort of thing under the name of Islam, albeit an extreme version of it.
And lets face it similar attrocities have been done under the names of other religions in the past.
