But the question that must be asked is, "will our European masters allow us to"?

Most of the compensation claims are not for actions 'in the heat of battle'.

They are for allegations of torture and maltreatment.

There is a convention which we have signed up to. We should follow it rather than ignore it and then get sued.

If we opt out because we want to torture prisoners, then we can hardly complain when British soldiers are murdered and tortured.

Who listens to us???
Retrocop,

So we should lower our own morals to those of al-qaeda?
Yes. If we wish to beat them.No use going into a fight with your hands tied behind your back is there?
Terrorists aren't uniformed identifiable soldiers. They are not deserving of the protection of the Geneva convention as they have not signed up to it as well they prove with their captured prisoners. Yes fight fire with fire or pack up.
Yes I quite agree with retro.

The terrorists involved in creating mayhem in the Middle East and elsewhere have absolutely no respect for Human Rights whatsoever. They torture, main and kill people at will. Meanwhile our troops end up in court on murder charges or are accused of violating the rights of such people. Well, in the words of a well known fictional cop in the San Francisco Police Department, “I’m all cut up about their rights”. I’m afraid the laws of cricket long since disappeared out of the window.
NewJudge, you may know the answer to this one.
Is there a statute of limitations on Yuman Rites?
One of Mr O's distant ancestors was hung as a witch a few hundred years ago.
If there is no statute of limitations, there could be a few quid in it for him.
As long as he is not a UK citizen and preferably has committed a serious criminal offence or two he should be in line for a nice slice of wedge, Mrs O. Even better if he can prove some connection as a victim of the slave trade. :-)
Agree with retrocop and N.J. .
Merci Jourdain,
I hope, very much, you are feeling better today. XXX
Here's the catch: you can't moan and complain about the actions of lawyers - ever. Not even when they get this unprincipled and greedy.

You just never know when you might need one.
