Stamp Collection for Sale

I have two large Stamp Albums collected around 1960, where is the best website where I can price these stamps so i would know roughly how much to expect if I sell them ? I was thinking of going to Stanley Gibbons in London but I need to have a rough idea before I go. They are stamps from all over the world, mainly sets of larger size 'pretty' stamps which are in mint condition but have been put into albums with special stickers on the back.

I doubt they are worth much poodicat, but they might be of interest to someone and they are just getting dusty in the loft. I expect when I look through them it will remind me of my childhood and I will keep them !

Well they aren't really getting dusty cos they are in a bag ! But you know what I mean.

My Dad used to collect stamps years ago and we held on to them for some years after he died. As Poodi says they are probably not worth very much. We took ours to a local Stamp and Coin Collectors Fair (look for an ad in the local paper). You can tout them about to different stall holders to get the best price, or at least get an idea of their worth. We found one or two genuine collectors who we felt were honest and trustworthy, rather than business people who want to make a big profit. Hope this helps.

Good idea, sanden, I will do that. I will go through them first and try to get some prices on ebay.

It sounds like you have stamps that are unused but "hinged" to assemble them in the album. As such, they will be worth not a great deal but still more than the sum total of the "face" value of their issue rate. Had they been unhinged the value would have been significantly higher.

on one of the Bargain Hunt/Flog It type programs the experts said that most collections were bought by people who would then trawl through in the hope of finding something a bit special, but unfortunately as has already been said they don't want to pay deal

Karl, some are hinged, some aren't and they are all mint.

The thing to remember about stamps is that they are fiddly little bits of paper and take a lot of time to handle, price and put in stockbooks, advertising for sale etc. I think that buying prices are likely to be around only 10% of Gibbons catalogue prices.
Any mint British stamps are probably best used as postage.
