When we are in Spain we have to call a mobile phone which starts with +44 then the number, what do you dial for the plus sign

Many phones actually have a + symbol on the keypad. So, rather obviously, that's what you press. (It automatically dials the international 'exit code' from whichever country you're in). However you can also dial the exit code yourself which in Spain (as in almost all EU countries) is '00'. (Remember to remove the first '0' from the UK number after '44').

The foregoing assumes that you're calling from mobile phone registered to a non-UK network, or from a landline. If you're calling from a mobile phone registered to a UK network then simply dialling the number in exactly the same way as you would at home (i.e. without any international code) should work anyway. (Your calls are all automatically routed back to the UK and treated as if you've made the call at home).

+44 is the intentional code for the UK.

As Prudie states, the international dialling code for Spain is +34, not +44 (which is the UK code).

So, if you've been given a number starting with +44, it's either an error or the person is using a phone registered to a UK network. (In which case you call that number from the UK, or from another mobile registered in the UK, in exactly the same way as normal, with NO international code at all. If you're calling from a Spanish landline you dial 00 44, in just the same way as you would if the person you were calling was still in the UK).
