1842 Tithe Register

The 1842 Tithe Register for the area in which I live refers to a cottage/farmhouse with attached barns (now Grade 2 Listed Buildings) as being `Farm Buildings`. Am I correct in assuming therefore that the cottage/farmhouse must have been converted from the `Farm Buildings` sometime after 1842 otherwise it would have been referred to as a `Homestead`?
Also, were uninhabited properties referred to as `Homesteads`?
Any answers or suggestions would be gratefully received.

Sounds like it was converted. What have you found from the 1841 census? If it was a rural community, which it sounds like, reading the enumerators walking /riding route at the start of that particular enumeration district should give you some detail as to properties included, which you can then cross reference either with the 1841 os maps or the tithe map.,

DJHawkes many thanks for the reply, it`s appreciated. You are correct the property was in a rural community. Although I have a copy of the 1841 census I never realised that the route the enumerator took was shown at the start of the district in question. I will take a look tomorrow when I visit the local Archives Office. Thanks again.
