For the past week, whenever I switch on my computer I get a warning message advising me my version of Windows Microsoft is not genuine and I may be a victim of counterfeiting. I have had the system for 2 years without this message appearing. any advice. could it be a virus etc.

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.Not a virus. It is genuine. Just a couple of weeks ago Microsoft put out an automatic update called 'Verification Tool'. This checks your version of windows. The message means that a version of Windows from the same installation CD has already been registered.
Only way to avoid it is to use a restore point from before the download, and then don't allow the 'Verification Tool' to be installed next time it downloads.
It won't cause problems, other than the constant nags, but it will restrict what future downloads you can install. Read more about it on this other forum
